What Is CBT?

Cognitive behavioural therapy, or CBT, is a talking therapy based on the theory that thoughts, feelings, what we do and how our body feels are all connected. If we change one of these we can alter the others.

When people experience psychological difficulties, it is very common to fall into patterns of thinking and responding which can worsen how we feel. CBT works to help us notice and change problematic thinking styles (and how we relate to our thinking), or behaviour patterns so we can feel better.

CBT encourages clients to develop tools and strategies to essentially become your own therapist. There is an emphasis on working to develop and practice coping skills and strategies both in and between sessions.

How Many Sessions will I Need?

CBT is usually a short-term therapy (between 6-20 sessions). It is largely a present focused therapy, treating psychological difficulties that are going on in your current life. For many clients it can help with CBT to take time understanding the development of the problem, to aid further comprehension of how problems manifest in the here and now. The first session is usually an assessment which can take 1-2 sessions. The purpose of an assessment is to understand together what the main problems are, what you would like to work on in therapy, what your goals for therapy are.

What happens in a treatment session and how long do they last?

Most treatment sessions last 50-60 minutes, although some treatment sessions may need to be 90 minutes (this will be negotiated with you beforehand). Depending on the type of therapy approach will depend on how the session is structured. For example, CBT is a practical therapy focusing on your concerns in the here and now so is usually more structured than a counselling approach. In a CBT treatment session we would tend to set an agenda together at the start of treatment. Then we would review at the homework work set from last week, you may learn a new skill or coping strategy for anxiety or depression in the session and then a new homework task will be set so you can practice this skill outside of session.
